You change stress to emphasize, give new information, contrast information or to clarify. In other words, English lets you put the stress on different words (or parts of words) to change the meaning of the whole sentence. WebAll dictionaries give the phonetic spelling of a word. This is where they show which syllable is stressed, usually with an apostrophe ( ') just before or just after the stressed syllable. (The notes in the dictionary will explain the system used.)
