WebJul 13, 2024 · The Charlton 8550 series covered line sizes from 8 to 15, depending on the spool. I know what you mean about the size: the frame with any of the four spools seems quite big. The 8500 1.6 is indeed quite rare, and would be a nice 10-11 reel if you found one. Weight-wise, I’ll bet a 8500 1.6 weighs as much (or more?) than an 8550. Compressor oil is solvent free and is what Jack Charlton recommended for the spindle and spool (but obviously in more sparing amounts). For anything in saltwater I think I'd choose the 8500. Especially if using bamboo then the extra weight of the 8500 is not as much of an issue. I did catch lots of Bahamian bonefish on my 8450 7/8, however.
